vehicles before year 2000 cleaner than these days hybrids?
HOWARD WILNER automotive news
The car is very quick. Highway passes are almost too easy, and when I first had the car I found that the tires spun pretty easily off the line. The thing handles like a dream. The steering is very responsive, and the suspension does a good job keeping the body roll at a minimum on hard turns. It could be a little tighter though, but that's just my preference. If it had a strut tower bar and a little firmer spring setup it would be perfect. One grip I've had is why GM didn't offer these cars in a manual transmission. The auto shifts very nicely, it has a nice bite to it, but I think this car would be that much more enjoyable with a 5 speed.( HOWARD WILNER the best tips)

HOWARD WILNER vehicle FAQ => I bought this car brand new in July of 1996. I have owned it for 12 years. It has been the most trouble free car that I have ever owned in my life. More than my Toyota's or Honda's that I've owned. It has never left me stranded anywhere. I don't beat on it & do all the maintenance on time & I steam clean the engine bay once in a long while to get all the grime off the electrical & mechanical components.
I bought a new 2000 Grand Am G.T. in July 2000. We now have 80,000 care-free miles, other than a battery, and new tires at 65,000 miles, and general maintenance, this has been an excellent, trouble-free automobile. Car still looks new, and rides and handles like new. Great car.

This 2001 Birkin S3 1965 Lotus 7 Replica is a rocket with about 1250 pound curb weight and a warmed over 2.0 liter Zetec, it is seriously quick. The handling is out of this world. Drives like a race car, rides like a race car, it is a race car with street equipment. Not my only car, thank God! I have a C3500 truck for hauling and a 1948 MG TC for its looks. Had a 2000 Volkswagen Passat 4-Motion until it got totalled out in a freak hailstorm about a month ago. Hope to replace the Passat with a Miata so I will have to choose between three of the greatest sportcars in the world.
The 3.4 Camaro/Firebird swap is nearly as easy as a 2.8. The block bolts right in and the FIero accessories and intake bolt to the block. The only mod needed is an easy one. The starter needs to be relocated to the opposite side and you must use a Fiero water pump.

the 2000 Pontiac Grand Am SE1. Driver side window stopped working 5 months after I bought the car. 5 months later every time I braked at anything over 60mph the whole car would shudder. Brake pads had to be replaced (luckily under warranty). 1 week later back to the dealer to get the brake pads shaved (still shuddering). 3 months later the ac stopped working in the middle of the summer - what a joy! Just today had to have the car towed to dealership for possible replacement of transmission on a not even 3 year old car with only 49500 miles on it - a cost of about $3000 because I did not get the extended warranty.
The 1999 Alfa Romeo 146 Sport, the rear window washer didn't work after about 5,000 miles. 15,000 mile car started missing, needed new connections and spark plugs (spark plug weren't covered under warranty (EURO 240.00) 35,000 lambda sensor in Cat needed replacing. Covered under warranty. 50,000 miles Throttle Body needed replacing, took 3 visits as the first replacement was faulty, my second visit the wrong throttle body was in the box... 3rd time lucky (Alfa mechanic told me that it's a fault with Alfa throttle bodies, they all go around 50,000 miles.

HOWARD WILNER cool vehicles => The boot is legendary. I have carried all sorts of stuff - beds, a garden, a tandem bike (well, a LWB recumbent), an oversized aquarium... it all gets swallowed up in this huge portable black hole. There is a really annoying lip, though - none of the Volvoeque "slide it in", you have to hump it over the bump. Comfort is superb. Everyone comments on how comfortable it is, how solid it feels, how there are no rattles and squeaks - though they are there. Wierd perception thing. Honestly, if you haven't done a long drive in a Saab 900 (old), you won't appreciate the depth of the comfort achieved. Unless you have a Volvo. Bodywork has lasted well, but its not impervious to rust. Mudflaps have helped in this respect, dispite grinding on every road bump you find.

The 1994 SAAB 900 s. It is possible to park the car in any other gear other than reverse and then start it without a key. Had a bad exhaust leak. Heater core was bad causing severe loss of coolant. Brakes got rusty surprisingly quick. Windscreen wipers don't work. Rear hatchback door struts gave out causing a broken finger. Eats a lot of oil.
The 1987 Maruti 800 is truly the people's car of India. Small, nimble, and takes you from point A to point B without hassle. My dad has been driving this since 1987 and he today he hates driving any big cars Corolla/Accent etc. while driving around in the city. At high speeds on highways it does give you jitters, but then it's not advisable to take it too fast. Extremely reliable. Extremely economical. Consistently gave 18-20 kms./litre. Had to change the suspensions 2 years back. When the car was brand new, the radiator was leaking and the front door would not lock, but the dealer was quite competent. In-fact dad had befriended a very good mechanic at the dealership and so the car always remained in top shape.

The standard hands-free phone system, known as U Connect, allows you to send and receive calls. It connects easily to the system and reconnects your phone automatically every time you get in the SUV, but the voice recognition software had difficulty deciphering my very plain American accent. Test after test, I would ask the system to call "home" and it would dial "Ford." Not the best choice for a Chrysler. While the system will upload your phone's address book, I found it easier to dial the number on the phone and then speak through the hands-free system. Certain functions are only available if the car is stopped or if you are a passenger. Passengers can talk freely to it. I liked how the system asked if I was a passenger so I could change features. The system cannot detect lies.
The 2000 Pontiac Grand Am GT have not tested this on highway yet, but I would have to imagine I would get 40 miles to the gallon. I highly recommend closing the ram air boxes extra hole, get a K&N air filter, and ripping out the extremely constrictive GM exhaust and putting a performance exhaust on. The exhaust cost me 450 dollars, 80 for the air filter, some duct tape for the air filter box hole. All in all, the car has incredible pick up and speed with these modifications, and I think people are surprised to see this car fly down the road. Over all, if you take care of your car, It is an impressive peace of machinery. I Love my Grand Am GT and I look forward to keeping it till it falls to the ground.

HOWARD WILNER expensive-brand vehicle => Infiniti of Japan, the luxury division of Nissan, has a lineup that is based on rear-drive platforms. But it has been adding all-wheel drive steadily, to the point where every model except the G37 coupe can be ordered with all-wheel drive. For about $40,000, the mid-size all-wheel-drive Infiniti G35x four-door sedan comes with all the bells and whistles, including a 306-horsepower V6 engine, navigation and a sport package. Though not the quickest off the line, it delivers taut handling, a balanced feel and comfortable, long-distance cruising.

The 1999 Pontiac Grand Am GT, I bought this car earlier this year for a commuter vehicle for school. Prior to this I mainly drove a 98 GMC K1500 which was a gas hog. I used to pay $45+ a week to commute, now I only pay $20. The car-fax I got when buying the car showed that the previous owner maintained it pretty well. They had GM do oil changes every 3k miles, a complete tune-up, brake and tire replacement when needed, etc etc. The only part that I had to replace due due to GM is the window regulator in the passenger side window. The BCM needed replacement due to user error; when changing a bulb it wasn't seated right and caused a short which fried the module. Dumb mistake on my part.
The 1988 SAAB 900 I
Petrol pump replaced (was full of dirt from previous owner - a farmer with own pump) Fuel Injection problems traced to dealer setting idle jet too low. Rear hatch would come loose if carrying anything heavy or bulky that would rub against the rear door - may be due to a nasty nearside rear shunt it had when young. Nearside rear door needed a teeny bit more elbow to shut properly. On-going electrical problems - things cutting out, indicators dim etc - not the alternator as dealer said, but bad earth, which "bloke in shed" found. Solved by welding earth to body.( HOWARD WILNER vehicle FAQ)

Introduced as a 2007 model, this is a remarkable little wagonlike crossover that has an optional third row of seating, making it the least-expensive and most fuel-efficient family hauler on the market. How inexpensive? With the $500 extra for the third seat, the midlevel LX model has a list price of $19,045, including $650 freight. The base Rondo begins at $17,045, but is not offered with the third seat. While the Rondo is not the gas-sipper that, say, a Toyota Corolla is, the EPA ratings are much better than those of the typical midsize or larger SUV: 19 miles per gallon in the city and 26 on the highway with the base four-cylinder engine. The tank holds 15.8 gallons of fuel, about half as much as some of the big SUVs.

Sway bar link rubber bushing dry rotted/ replaced by me at a parts cost of $5.16 (easy job)Fan belt dry rotted / broke while driving; was able to drive it home 2 miles. Then drove to auto parts, replaced in parking lot in 5 minutes, cost $18.00 (easy job)Fuel injector plugged, new cost $84.00. I paid $80.00 for the car, went to junk yard, removed one from 88 Buick Century replaced it for 5.00.Battery cradle was rusted out, not acid ate as I have read on this site. Pontiac could not seen the water that holds in the pan plus the weight of battery holds moisture for longer amounts of time because of the louvered vents. Will replace with a plastic one.

Exhaust manifold gaskets have blown. 2.8 engine spun connecting rod bearings about three months ago (replaced the 2.8 with a 3.4). Clutch (but with 90,000 some miles on it why not?) Crack in sail panel. The body lines and style are a timeless design! The interior is very "cockpit like". The car handles very well.
